SELF-DEVELOPMENT OF PEOPLE

Self Development of People (SDOP) is an ecumenical ministry established in 1970 by the Presbyterian General Assembly joining persons of similar interest with groups throughout our world who suffer the indignities and disadvantages of poverty, oppression or injustice.

SDOP'S MISSION

The Self-Development of People is a ministry that affirms God's concern for humankind. We are Presbyterians and ecumenical partners, dissatisfied with poverty and oppression, united in faith and action through sharing, confronting and enabling. We participate in the empowerment of economically poor, oppressed and disadvantaged people who are seeking to change the structures that perpetuate poverty, oppression and injustice.

Both the National SDOP www.pcusa.org/sdop and the Synod of the Rocky Mountains SDOP partner with groups to share and use the human and material resources God has provided. Self-Development is the freeing of a person to be the kind of person God intended, because all humanity was created in God's image. It is human dignity and worth; it is justice; it is spiritual, social, political and cultural freedom. It partners with those oppressed by poverty, who have decided what they will do to change their situation. It is the Church in action made possible by the One Great Hour of Sharing

SDOP IS
  • About human dignity, self-reliance and community growth
  • A partner in long-term solutions
  • About the empowerment of people

SDOP IS NOT

  • A crisis fund for emergency situations
  • A provider of scholarships
  • A financial institution for personal loans or grants
  • A charity
SDOP assists communities and groups as they develop projects.  The projects must be presented, owned and controlled by the groups who will directly benefit from them.
